Report from Dorset Squash

Well what a fabulous day of squash last Sunday from our Dorset juniors. From 5 years to 16, the youngsters displayed some wonderful and exciting squash. At the same time we had a group of 8-10 year olds, boys and girls, battling it out and again there was some great squash. Some real little stars in the making. It was a 2RM final with Riley Davies looking very strong, dropping very few points throughout the morning, beating Sam Tiller Wood 2-0.

In group E, well what can I say, just a fabulous enthusiastic group of boys displaying some exciting squash. A very tight final with Toby Lemans just edging it against Oliver Dunn 2-1, total points won 30-27, just showing how close the games were. At the other end of the group, Alex Abercrombie, although not winning today, is improving all the time proving what a tough little group this was.

Group E final positions;
1st Toby Lemans
2nd Oliver Dunn
3rd Ed Elliott
4th Daniel Vines
5th Daniel Hill
6th Ashton Dowling
7th Jonathan Curwain
8th Alex Abercrombie

In to the afternoon and our top county players displayed some super squash showing us just how much they have all improved in just one season. This was probably the closest contested group, in that anyone could have won. These boys are improving weekly and it makes us proud as a county to see these 10-11 year olds battle so hard and so passionately. Jack Harris had a fabulous semi-final against Harry Slade with Harry victorious in the 5th taking him in to the final to meet Logan Macey who had seen off Oliver Galloway in a hard fought match in the other semi. Technically there was nothing separating Logan and Harry in the final and with a wonderful demonstration of squash, Logan managed to edge each game to win 3-0.

County A final positions;
1st Logan Macey
2nd Harry Slade
3rd Ollie Galloway
4th Jack Harris
5th Orlando Organ
6th Ethan Franklin
7th Isaac Watts
8th Oscar Whitfield

In the last and oldest group of the day, Alex Fordham and Sam Jourdain played out their final with a 5 setter, with Sam winning 11-7 in the 5th. A great match to end the day and just summed up the days squash, both boys playing their hearts out. Our 2 top girls played for 3rd/4th position and 16 year old Isabella beat 14 year Abi 3-1 in a hard hitting match with Abi giving Isabella a real run for her money!

County B final positions;
1st Sam Jourdain
2nd Alex Fordham
3rd Isabella White
4th Abi Russell
5th Jacob Whitfield
6th Ben Stewart
7th Lydia Glanville
8th Zach White

Well done to everyone who played today. Watching the juniors today just confirms why we love coaching the game! They all played with gusto and enthusiasm but just as importantly, it was wonderful to see lots of smiling faces.

The afternoon ended with a presentation and trophies were allocated as follows;

Dorset Junior U11 Boys Player of the Year 2018-19
This young player continues to impress and is building in confidence. He played at number 1 for Dorset U11’s, he was selected to train with the regional “Aspire” sessions at Millfield school and is now playing in the adult leagues at 2 Riversmeet! This player led the U11 boys to the final stages of the inter counties and throughout the stages also won a good share of his matches. This is very well deserved, well done Jack Harris!

Dorset Junior U13 Boys Player of the Year 2018-19
Having failed to qualify to play for the boys U11’s because he was a few days too old, this young player got selected to play for boys U13’s, consequently he was the youngest in the team and the competition. He has more than stepped up to this challenge and established himself firmly in the team. He has also been selected to train with the regional “Aspire” sessions at Millfield school and has started to play in the adult leagues at 2 Riversmeet. He has made a great account of himself this season and thoroughly deserves this award, well done Ollie Galloway!

Dorset Junior U13 Girls Player of the Year 2018-19
This was a tricky one! Our U13 girls are developing nicely and we have a lovely core of players starting to grow in their squash confidence and they are also really beginning to bond as a group. We have Rosie Burnand, Lara Sheldon, Lisa Steward, Alex Sherwin and Izzy Jones. The award is going to someone who is developing in to a real team leader. Nothing seems to phase her. She is developing in to a good little player and I look forward to see her and her team mates develop in the years to come. Well done to Lisa Stewart.

Dorset Junior U17 Boys Player of the Year 2018-19
This young man has been the stalwart player of the boys U17’s squad and keeps a very positive mentality. This season he has also performed extremely well; in the inter counties stage 2 he was the only one who remained unbeaten in all his matches. In the Regional finals, which are happening this weekend, he will be heading up the 2nd team for the South West and has also started to play team squash for 2 Riversmeet! A great season for him, well done and well deserved Noah Campbell-Wynter!
Club player trophy - a player who has progressed into senior club team and helps out with junior coaching;

This award goes to someone who really has progressed his squash. He is now playing at number 3 in the 2RM 1st team. He is committed, works hard and has a great ambition to continue improving his game. He regularly helps Charlie and Sophie with their juniors and is a real inspiration to the juniors over there. This year the award goes to Luca Campbell-Wynter

Biles Trophy - is for not usually the top player but one that has tried the hardest and has shown improvement, has supported local competitions and helps out. This normally goes to one of the younger players;

This player has been nominated by Bev and Andy. This player has really stepped to the mark this season; in terms of her own game and helping out our younger players. She has shown reliability, enthusiasm and I think her passion for the game has certainly increased over the season. She is beginning to be an inspiration to our young players. She has played in many of the local tournaments and is now competing in the ES bronze events. This year this award goes to Isabella Rowan.

Lanz Trophy - a player who has progressed through all age groups and who has supported the junior section in all activities. (This player should be a good ambassador for the up and coming players to watch;

This year, this award goes to someone who regularly helps out with junior squash, always has a smile on her face and the players love her! She has been playing since she was 5 years old and is now 16. Well done Lucy Hill.

Finally we had a raffle from which we have raised more than £150 which will go back in to the Dorset Squash junior coffers. Some of the prizes were won by;

1. £150 Karakal S-Pro racket – David Vines
2. A white squash ball signed by the world number 1 Raneem El Welily – Rebecca Gillard
3. Karakal racket bag worth £70 – Orlando Organ
4. Unsquashable navy hoodie worth £40 in XS (12-13 years) – Alfie Bartlett
