Diet trends explored
Posted on 07th Feb 2023
New year, new approach to food? Our knowledgeable Gym Team decided to each explore a popular trend. Some of them even experimented by trying the diet for a short period, to see how manageable it was. Keep scrolling to see what they concluded....
5:2- a fasting approach, where you eat normally for five days weekly, and then for two days you reduce your intake to a quarter of what you need.
Paleo- rooted in the past where people ate what they could hunt and gather from local land eg. fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds.
Mediterrean - based on the traditional foods of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, olive oil, seeds, herbs and spices.
Keto - the focus is on fresh with fish and seafood, meat and poultry, non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, and zucchini, avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, eggs, high-fat dairy products, olive oil and other oils, and high-cocoa chocolate.
Carnivore - solely red meat, poultry, fish, and eggs.
Vegetarian - only plant-based foods, such as whole fruits and vegetables, legumes and nuts, and whole grains.
The verdict - it will be no surprise that our team concluded most trends are just that and a long term sustainable plan is the classic, unchanging:
- at fresh foods, avoid processed goods.
- limit your sugar and caffeine intake.
- don't avoid "treats" just have them in moderation! Try and make a healthy choice at every opportunity.
- be mindful of portion sizes.
- exercise regularly, include both weights and cardio.
- drink plenty of water!
Mark, Manager and knowledge powerhouse, added, "We found that the best balanced and potentially healthiest diets for the majority of the population were the ones that incorporated the best essential nutrient profiles (Aminos’ Minerals, Vitamins and EFAs) along with fibre. These included Mediterranean, paleo and potentially Intermittent fasting (depending on food choices). We found benefits in certain diets for people that may suffer with autoimmune disease and/or allergies and intolerances. These included Paleo and Carnivore primarily."
